The Man Bunion

The Man Bunion

Hallux Rigidus or Hallux Limitus, sometimes known as the man-bunion, happens to both men and women.

Symptoms can include:

-pain or ache in the big toe joint

-possible limited decreased motion

-pain with motion of the big toe joint

-arthritis

-enlargement of the joint

-shoe irritation

-redness or swelling in the area

-cracking or popping sound of the joint

It can happen after injury or can be caused from everyday ware and tare; it can be hereditary in nature.

Heeled shoes, super flat or floppy non-supportive shoes can worsen it. Activities such as hiking, running, golf, walking and lunges can aggravate it.

First line treatment includes: rest, ice, oral NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti

inflammaory drugs such as ibuprophen, naproxen and even tylenol), topical pain relievers, change of shoe gear or activity, and over the counter arch support. If these methods are not relieving your pain your doctor may prescribe physical therapy, cold laser treatments, prescription medications, she may suggest a steroid injection also. If very severe of left untreated the condition may require surgery.

Please visit the Doctors at Advance Foot & Ankle to receive proper diagnosis and to discuss your treatment options.
