New Treatment Option for Heel Pain

New Treatment Option for Heel Pain

Heel pain is one of the most common reasons why people see us.  This pain is usually due to plantar fasciitis which is inflammation of a thick band of tissue that connects your heel to the ball of the foot called the plantar fascia.  This ligament can become thickened and develop micro tears when it becomes inflamed.    First line of treatment for this condition begins with orthotics for your shoes, stretching the calf muscle and plantar fascia, NSAID’s and cortisone injections.  Some people do not respond to these treatments and they then develop chronic inflammation and thickening of the plantar fascia which is called plantar fasciosis.

There is now a new treatment option for those people who do not respond to conventional conservative care and would like to avoid surgery.   AmnioFix® is an injectable that contains active, healing growth factors that are harvested from amniotic tissue and are processed through a proprietary PURION® process that combines cleaning, dehydration and sterilization.   These cells are then injected into the plantar fascia in the office without the need for sedation.   One recent study showed that a single dose injection of AmnioFix® significantly reduced plantar fasciitis pain in 10/10 patients.  They achieved 62% pain reduction by week 2, 96% by week 4, and again had 96% pain reduction at week 6.  These results were maintained over a 4-month observation period.   Another Study demonstrated that patients receiving an AmnioFix® injection for plantar fasciitis had significant pain reduction compared to those receiving a placebo injection through an 8 week follow-up.
