Nearly every day one of our patients will ask us, “Can you take a look at that nail and see if it’s fungus?”  This is usually asked because the nail is discolored, thickened, cracked or just, “ugly”.  Most of the time we can look at your nails and with good confidence diagnose fungus or not.   Other times, it may not be so straightforward.  The nail could be different in appearance for other reasons like irritation from your shoes, trauma or dermatological disorders such as psoriasis.  You may also have only one nail that is affected and all others are normal in appearance.  Because nobody is 100% right, we have testing available to check for fungus.  It is pain free and only involves us taking a clipping of the nail.  It is then sent to a lab where it is tested for fungal elements.  The results are back within 5 days on most occasions.  Based on those results, we can then tailor a treatment plan for you.   At Advanced Foot and Ankle, we have treated thousands of fungal toenails with a variety of the latest and most advanced therapies.  If you would like to be evaluated for toenail fungus or have any other foot/ankle condition, please call us at 972-542-2155.
