Why You Should See a Specialist for Your Flat Feet or Fallen Arches

Many people suffer from a condition called Pes Planus, or flat feet. This can be caused by several different reasons, some of which are genetic or simply unknown. Improper biomechanics is the biggest factor that may lead to fallen arches. Wearing improper shoe gear or going barefoot are examples of what can contribute to a flat foot deformity.

Symptoms of flat feet include toes pointing outward, fallen arches, ankles rolling outward, and pain on the inside or outside of the rearfoot and ankle. Flat feet can cause impingement of nerves or undue stress on joints and tendons in the foot that can lead to tendonitis or even rupture. If left untreated, flat feet can become very painful. They can ultimately lead to stress on joints, tendons, and other anatomical structures that may cause damage, cartilage loss, arthritis, or tendon rupture. It is vital to be seen by a specialist such as Dr. Garrett Nelson in order to prevent the progression of flat feet and avoid these complications that can arise. Restoring proper biomechanics through modalities such as bracing, inserts, proper shoe gear, physical therapy, and stretching can go a long ways to restore proper anatomical function of the foot and ankle.
