What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition that causes heel pain and discomfort. The pain is felt at the bottom of the heel and sometimes continues along the arch of the foot, as well. Without treatment, plantar fasciitis can become worse over time and possibly lead to other issues. Dr. Eric Silvers, Dr. Christopher Witt, and Dr. Melissa Sgro, the experienced podiatrists at Advanced Foot and Ankle Center in McKinney and Prosper, TX, treat heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis.

Plantar Fasciitis

A thick band of connective tissues called plantar fascia run along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. The function of these tissues is to provide shock absorption, support the arch, and stabilize the foot. Plantar fasciitis can occur when the tissues develop small tears due to daily wear and tear, repeated stress, or overuse. Tears in the plantar fascia tissues often result in inflammation and pain.

Some common causes of damage to the plantar fascia tissues and the development of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Long-distance running
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Walking with an irregular gait (e.g., overpronation)
  • Activities that put stress on the heels (e.g., certain sports)
  • Wearing shoes without enough support (e.g., high heels)
  • Being overweight or obese

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain and discomfort at the bottom of the heel, just below the heel bone. Some individuals also experience pain and stiffness in the arches of the feet. The symptoms of plantar fasciitis tend to be worse first thing in the morning, as well as after long periods of standing or sitting without stretching the feet. Exercise or light activity can sometimes help reduce the pain and discomfort of plantar fasciitis.

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Patients with plantar fasciitis should rest the feet and limit or avoid physical activity to allow the plantar fascia tissues to heal. Left untreated, the condition could become worse and lead to chronic inflammation and pain. The skilled podiatrists at our foot and ankle center in Prosper, TX, treat heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis using a variety of effective methods. They develop individualized treatment plans tailored to the symptoms and needs of the patient.

Treatment methods for heel pain due to plantar fasciitis could include:

  • Gently flexing or stretching the feet throughout the day
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy exercises
  • Custom orthotics
  • Padding and strapping
  • Removable walking cast
  • Night splints

The pain and stiffness caused by plantar fasciitis can make it difficult to carry out everyday activities. Just starting the day can be challenging as symptoms are often more pronounced first thing in the morning. Fortunately, there are treatments that can help.
