Varicose Veins treatment and Prevention

Varicose Veins treatment and Prevention

Many things can cause varicose veins as a child I thought they were called “very gross veins” and although some feel they are cosmetically unsightly, they are usually benign.

What is a varicose vein? Veins bring blood back up towards the heart. A varicose vein is a dilated vein after the valve in the vein has failed to function well. This allows back flow and eventually enlargement and dilation of the smooth muscle within the vessel wall.  Where are varicose veins? You can get a varicose vein anywhere in your body, but they are most people associate them with legs.

What causes varicose veins? The causes are largely unknown. We do know there is a genetic component to it- if mom or dad had them then you might be more prone to them. Pregnant women, people that stand or sit for extended periods of time, and people who are sedentary or have gained weight have the highest risk for developing varicose veins.

Prevention of varicose veins often includes well-fitting compression stockings with the appropriate compression grade, exercise and avoiding a dependent position for long periods of time. Treatment can include compression stockings, laser therapy, injections and surgical procedures.

If you would like to consider compression stockings as treatment or prevention please contact us today for a consultation and fitting.
