Preventing Ingrown Toenails

Preventing Ingrown Toenails

While ingrown toenails are relatively common, particularly in the big toe, some cases produce excruciating pain and prove to be incredibly difficult to manage. An ingrown toenail develops when one side or corner of your toenail grows into the skin adjacent to it. This can result in swelling, pain, redness, tenderness, and even an infection. Fortunately, if you are feeling severe and/or radiating pain, you can turn to the Advanced Foot and Ankle Center in both Mckinney and Prosper, TX. In these locations, one of our podiatrists can take care of your ingrown toenail and help you avoid further complications.

Can You Prevent Ingrown Toenails?

You can take the following steps to prevent the development of ingrown nails:

  • Always check your feet. This is especially vital if you’re a diabetic because the simplest foot issue could lead to extremely severe complications.
  • Always trim your toenails at a length that’s level with your toe tips. Trimming them too short could lead to pressure on your toes or shoes to cause the nail to grow into your skin.
  • Make sure that your footwear fits properly. Any footwear that pinches your toes or puts too much pressure on them could make your toenail grow into the surrounding skin tissue. In addition, if your feet suffer from nerve damage, you might not be able to feel if your footwear is too tight.

Should You See a Podiatrist for an Ingrown Toenail?

Visit either our McKinney or Prosper, TX, office if you:

  • Have redness or pus that’s spreading or are feeling extreme discomfort in your affected toe.
  • Have diabetes or some other medical disorder that causes improper blood flow, and you suspect you have an infection or a sore.

It’s also very crucial to note that if left undetected and untreated, a seemingly harmless ingrown toenail could harbor an infection that could spread to the underlying bone and develop into a more severe infection right in your bone. If you are diabetic, complications could be especially serious. For instance, a tiny foot injury like a scrape, cut, ingrown toenail, corn, or callus, might not heal properly and turn into a severe infection such as a foot ulcer, which may require surgery to prevent gangrene or tissue death and decay.
